From compliance to capability

Airplane On Runway

About KEA Safety Consulting

At KEA Safety Consulting, we specialise in helping aviation organisations mature, strengthen, and operationalise their Safety Management Systems (SMS). We are dedicated to turning safety theory into practical, embedded systems that improve reporting culture, human performance, leadership decision-making, and operational resilience.

We focus on practical implementation and outcome oriented solutions. We work closely with aviation leaders to diagnose system weaknesses, identify cultural and reporting barriers, and lead safety improvement projects to enhance safety culture and operational resilience.

Services

Our comprehensive range of services focuses on system maturity rather than generic consulting. We offer tailored solutions to help aviation organisations progress from compliance to capability, ensuring that safety systems are operationally embedded and culturally supported.

SMS Maturity assessment

Most operators know their SMS needs work. Few know exactly where. Our maturity assessment gives you a clear, honest picture of where your SMS stands today — and a prioritised roadmap to get it where it needs to be.

Benchmarked against ICAO's SMS maturity model, this is the fastest way to understand your risk exposure and plan your next steps with confidence. Delivered as a scored report you can act on immediately.

What's included

  • 2–3 days on-site

  • Document & process review

  • Leadership interviews

  • Maturity scoring

  • Prioritised roadmap

  • Executive debrief

Virtual Safety Manager

For operators who need ongoing safety expertise without the cost of a full-time hire. As your Virtual Safety Officer, we provide the consistent, expert oversight that keeps your SMS active, your reporting culture healthy, and your regulatory standing solid.

This is not a check-in call once a month. We review your safety data, facilitate your safety committees, dig into incidents, and make sure your SMS keeps pace with your operation — and with CAA requirements as they evolve.

  • SPI monitoring & reporting

  • Incident & hazard review

  • Safety committee facilitation

  • Regulatory update briefings

  • Risk register maintenance

  • Direct access via phone & email

Building an SMS from scratch — or overhauling one that exists on paper but not in practice. We take you from gap analysis through to a fully operational safety management system your people will actually use.

This isn't a documentation exercise. We work alongside your team to embed the processes, tools, and reporting culture that make an SMS function day-to-day. Includes full support through CAA submission and any follow-up queries.

What's included

  • Full gap analysis

  • SMS manual & procedures

  • Safety risk register

  • SPI framework

  • Reporting system setup

  • Staff training

  • CAA submission support

  • 3-month post-launch review

SMS Implementation

SMS Workshops

Practical, operations-focused training for flight crews and management teams. We cover the fundamentals of safety management without the theory-heavy content that loses rooms. Workshops are tailored to your operation type — helicopter, fixed wing, flight training, or mixed fleet.

Available as standalone training or as part of an implementation engagement. Can be delivered on-site across New Zealand or for multiple operators in a shared format.

Topics available

  • SMS fundamentals

  • Hazard identification & SRM

  • Just & reporting culture

  • Safety leadership

  • Human factors
